VeloFlow – this innovative pilot project aims to make cycling in Berlin smoother, safer, and more attractive.

Digital LED displays along key cycling routes provide cyclists with clear recommendation up to around 200 m before a traffic light as to whether they will reach the next traffic light while its green. This allows cyclists to adjust their speed resulting in less hectic acceleration, braking and stress. Sensors at the traffic lights (known as roadside units) record traffic light phases in real time and wirelessly send the data to the VeloFlow displays. This “Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory” technology (GLOSA) visually shows you whether you will make it through the green light or whether it is better to continue rolling at a leisurely pace. This leads to more comfort and more relaxed driving and better flow due to less stop-and-go traffic. The aim is to increase safety by providing advance information to prevent red light violations.

VeloFlow is designed as a pilot and research project. The effects on driving behavior and traffic flow are being systematically evaluated in order to develop optimized traffic and mobility strategies.
