Electrification in cycling has been increasing rapidly during the last few years. More and more people are using e-bikes, and new technologies such as information and communications technologies and Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems can now be used to increase cycling safety. What technologies can make e-bikes safer and smarter? A research group from the University of Twente, proposed a classification for the levels of smartness of the emerging "smart bikes" based on state-of-the-art technologies focusing on cyclists' safety. In addition, they evaluated the Technology Readiness Levels of these technologies and the current status. You can find more in a recent research publication here.
